Amani, who is a native Madisonian, started her professional career as an investigative journalist.
She worked in research and advising, policy development, issues advocacy, coalition building, and grassroots outreach for a number of different organizations on a local, state and national level including the National Urban League and served as a Campaign Aide for Mayor Paul Soglin.
As a life-long educator and former small business owner, with a depth of experience in real estate development, tenant management and law, Amani is committed to continuing her family’s long legacy of servant leadership.
Amani comes from a family of advisers, advocates, and activists, going back generations from Dr. Opal Lee down through the builders of Greenwood (America’s Black Wall Street) to her parents who have changed the landscape of Madison; doers, who has have long fought for everyone’s basic rights and freedoms, for all.
Madison’s own Anana Elementary School is named after Amani’s mother, the late Milele Chikasa Anana.
